No Pulp Music--founded in October of 2008-- is a combination between an online magazine and blog.
Our staff includes musicians, industry folk, writers, photographers, and people who just plain like to jam.
There is no formula to the site posts, and our coverage ranges from random music rants to more traditional
article-style album and show reviews. The site also features a photography section for a glimpse into live
showaction and a digital vinyl player to listen to some of our current jams. No Pulp Music will soon have
a video aspect of the site, so stay tuned for that addition.
An extension of No Pulp Music, The No Pulp Music Group: Artist Representation, Booking and Publicity
is gaining more momentum. The company was founded by partners Lindsay Gilbert, Michelle Fantus
and Jay Metcalf. In Addition to two fundraiser events that are taking place in 2009, The No Pulp
Music Group will be putting together dozens of other music events throughout the year in New
York City, and various other cities around the country
No Pulp is my brain child—though inspired and made possible by countless others. When I think about my life in terms of music, there is no official starting point. Music has always been present around me and is very much a part of who I am. Whether I am writing it, playing it, or listening to it—music is just an assumed addition to my day. I moved to New York City a year and a half ago in hopes of making all my career dreams come true. My main line of work is as an editor for a non-profit magazine, though I hold no less passion for my band side projects.
For all practical purposes, I am a writer. I got my Big Apple start as an editorial intern at Rolling Stone, which served to introduce me to some of my now closest friends—and roommate (fellow No Pulper Miss Adele Connolly). But, graphic design has become an increasingly more important aspect of my career, and I have started delving into publicity and promotion design—for a handful of bands and the indie label Eschatone Records. Musically, I play piano and do some minor writing here and there. And have a strong adoration for vinyl records.
As far as roots, I am a Midwest gal. On my last night in Ohio, I spent my late night minutes with my close friends. For a long time now, I have been part of the band Natex10—as both publicist and friend. Over the years, they have been upgraded to family-status and were some of the many people that it was hard to leave that June. Nate once told me, “We just love love.” Sitting on the front porch of their house that night, the living room was perfectly lit, with a spot on view of everyone dancing and laughing together. That is an image that has stuck with me, and that very connection people have to each other and music has been my motivation for starting this site—giving people both the music fix they need and the link to the people who are making and listening to it.
There is more than enough passion floating around the music industry, and that is what this site aims to capture. No Pulp mixes aspects of both an online magazine and blog site. Whether it is through photo journals, blogs, articles, reviews, videos, or songs, each staff member has something different to contribute, for a colorful, interactive take on music.
Being obsessed with New York City, I am well aware of how much this city has to offer on the music front—and I simply can’t get enough of it. I am lucky enough to be constantly surrounded by music junkies—spreading the love of every different kind of tune. One thing I miss every day about Ohio is Natex10’s house on Archwood Avenue—a house overflowing with songs and creativity. That atmosphere of friendship and fresh thoughts is what I want to come from No Pulp.
The name No Pulp came about through an office conversation between Rob and I about which orange juice to order for breakfast. It seemed to capture exactly what we were trying to do with the website—just the juice, minus all the unnecessary extras. Though it works on a few levels. First of all, I hate pulp in my orange juice. Second, we are a paperless publication, so it takes on an entirely new green vibe as well.
Whatever type of music you dig, we are hoping to cover it here at No Pulp. The staff is a very eclectic bunch, translating into music ideas and styles that are very different from one another. We hope you enjoy the site and look forward to your feedback.
This site is dedicated firstly to my parents, who put up with my over-enthusiastic singing as a child and encouraged me to be musically rounded. Secondly, to my fabulous friends. And last but not least, everyone reading this. This site is for you.
Ciao,
Lindsay
