Cruisin’ around with James Morrison

MLK is always a fantastic holiday. Even though it happens the same time every year, it always comes as a surprise day off work. This past Monday was made even better by an unexpected phone call from a good friend suggesting an unmatchable Monday night adventure: the opportunity to ride around Manhattan in a limousine bus with James Morrison. Ummm…YES, PLEASE!
I started listening to James about 4 years ago after his music was recommended to me by a friend (big props to Miss Adele Connolly for introducing me to this awesome Brit’s tunes..and bringing me along Monday night to meet him in person!). Sadly, after seeing James play at the Highline Ballroom in 2008, he hasn’t been back to the Big Apple—until this week (Perhaps you saw him on The Today Show Tuesday AM).
The wheels on the bus go…
5PM rolls around Monday, and we patiently waited outside the Universal offices for the previously mentioned amazing bus to pull up. We boarded the bus with only 12 other people, and spent an hour or so chilling with James Morrison—who, for the record, is an absolute doll. It is very refreshing when you meet a known musician and they are nothing short of seriously rocking. James played us a few acoustic tunes (even a Beatles cover while we sped past the Central Park Lennon Memorial), which was pretty stunning. His voice is amazing and right on point, and it isn’t very often you get a private stripped down performance from an artist you dig. Overall, one of my top NYC music moments!
If you don’t know James Morrison, get on it! He just came out with a third album this past fall (The Awakening), and the single “I Won’t Let You Go” is a seriously solid jam. Another great track is “Person I Should Have Been,” which James told us he wrote while in New Orleans, and the song shows major undertones of the city’s famous sound. However, do yourself a favor and give his older stuff a listen as well (Be sure to listen to “This Boy” from his first album Undiscovered. It’s a personal favorite of mine!).

Happy Listening!
